Stop Calling Them Difficult: Learn How to Communicate Across Generations

The Gen Z stare. The Gen Z pout. The response that makes a manager wonder, Did they hear anything I just said?

It has become a popular workplace conversation, but behind the jokes is a real leadership challenge.

Different generations do not always communicate, respond to authority, receive feedback, or approach work in the same way. What one generation considers professional, another may see as unnecessary. What one leader considers coaching may feel like parenting or criticism to a younger employee.

That is where leaders have to become more intentional.

Do Not Assume. Ask.

If an employee’s response seems dismissive, unclear, or disengaged, do not immediately label the behavior. Ask questions and create space for clarification.

Explain the Why

Younger employees may want more context around expectations and decisions. Providing context does not weaken leadership. It can help employees understand how their work connects to the bigger picture.

Close the Communication Loop

Do not stop at, “I told them.” Ask the employee to confirm the expectation, next step, deadline, or outcome. Clear communication works both ways.

Managing across generations does not mean lowering standards. It means recognizing that the way we communicate those standards may need to evolve.

The strongest workplaces will not be the ones where every generation thinks and behaves the same. They will be the ones where leaders and employees learn how to understand each other well enough to work effectively together.
